Description
KM 55, undated type issued in the 1600s, issued for the City-State of Basel. Small billon (low purity silver) coin, with the coat of arms on the obverse.Napoleon forced most of the Swiss Cantons to unify as the Helvetian Republic; the cantons revolted and wanted to be separate. Under the Act of Mediation (in effect 1805-1810), Napoleon granted the cantons some individuality (and the right to issue coins in their cantonal names), but they generally remained under French control.
