A lovely edition of the Underground pocket map design by 'Zero' aka Hans Schleger (not by HC Beck). This design ran from 1938-1941. This Number 3 edition, printed when Britain was on the brink of war with Germany in 1939, shows the Northern Line extension to Highgate as a solid line with a note beneath saying "Not until Summer 1940".
Yet the war would delay the opening until January 1941 & the other extensions mentioned on the back of map were either cancelled or not be completed until after WWII.
The story of this strange pause in Becks relationship with the design is as follows In a rather surprising move by London Transport, after the revolutionary HC Beck Underground map had been introduced in 1933, then in 1938 the design was put into the hands of Hans Schleger, a highly regarded and prolific poster designer.
In referring to this edition of the map, Harry Beck expressed his disapproval saying " I have just happened to see a proof of a new Underground folder. The 'H.C. Beck' diagram has been used, but with considerable and, I suggest, undesirable, alterations by another artist -- one not on the staff -- without reference to me".
Indeed the map maintains the all the elements of the Beck 'circuit' approach and he was justified in his
    disapproval
    of not being acknowledged.
Most notably was the absence of the iconic UndergrounD logo, a misguided and short sighted move that angered many who had spent the first part of the 20th century building the Underground brand.
That said, the map design was ahead of its time, seeing modern printing techniques and an early sign of the zoning (see central area in white) that would be later introduced on the London underground.
A rare map, in incredible condition, available to anyone in the world.
    This would fit into
    anyone's
