CHICAGO (CBS) — Three people are dead and a girl is seriously injured after a fiery crash in unincorporated McHenry County near Woodstock. The victims included two teenagers and a mother who leaves behind a little girl.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was still investigating the cause of the crash Monday, as multiple families mourning a sudden loss came to build a memorial at the site of the crash on Davis Road, west of Dean Street, where they laid flowers on top of the charred grass where one car burst into flames.
The uncle of one of the boys who died in the crash said his nephew was only 17 years old, and the other person in the car with him was 18.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said the two teens were in a 2021 Dodge Challenger Hellcat that was speeding just after noon Sunday on Davis Road, when it tried to pass a 2021 Jeep Wrangler in a no-passing zone.
The Hellcat then hit an oncoming 2020 Volvo XC 90 at the top of a hill, and spun out before catching fire.
The Jeep was struck by debris from the crash.
Sheriff’s officials said they found alcoholic beverage containers at the scene, but they have not confirmed if alcohol was a factor in the crash. Officials said speeding and reckless driving contributed to the crash.
The two teens in the Hellcat were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Volvo, a 47-year-old woman from Woodstock, had her daughter in the car with her. That woman died at the scene, and her daughter, a juvenile, was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition.
The two people in the Jeep were not injured.
None of the victims’ names have been released.
